Gas Fireplace Pilot Light Repair St. Louis

Fast Gas Fireplace Ignition Repair
The pilot and ignition system is the part of a gas fireplace that fails most often. A pilot that goes out, will not light, or lights but does not stay lit is almost always caused by one of a few parts: a dirty pilot orifice, a worn thermocouple, a weak thermopile, a bad igniter or spark electrode, or a gas valve that is no longer opening correctly.
Our technician cleans the pilot assembly, measures the millivolt output of the thermocouple and thermopile with a meter, checks the spark and the igniter wiring, and tests the gas valve and gas pressure. Newer fireplaces with electronic ignition (IPI) also have a control module, a receiver and batteries that we test. Once we know which part failed, we replace it and test the fireplace through several full cycles.
Not sure it is the pilot? Our gas fireplace repair visit covers every part of the fireplace.

Ignition Parts We Repair and Replace
Common Pilot Light and Ignition Symptoms
- The pilot lights but goes out when you let go of the knob
- The pilot stays lit but the main burner will not come on
- Clicking sound with no flame
- A weak, blue-and-yellow or lifting pilot flame
- The fireplace turns off on its own after running a while
- The remote or wall switch stopped working
Dust, Wear and Weak Millivolts
Most pilot problems start small. Dust and spider webs partly block the tiny pilot orifice, so the flame gets smaller and no longer heats the thermocouple or thermopile enough. Over the years these sensors also wear out and produce fewer millivolts. The result is a pilot that drops out, or a burner that will not stay on.
Yearly gas fireplace maintenance keeps the pilot clean and catches a weak sensor early, before it fails on the first cold night. Have a log set instead of a sealed fireplace? See our gas log repair service.

Why does my gas fireplace pilot light keep going out?
The most common causes are a dirty pilot orifice, a worn thermocouple, a weak thermopile, or a draft or vent problem. Cleaning and testing usually find the cause quickly.
Should I turn off my pilot light in summer?
Many owners do to save gas, and that is fine if you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Relighting it in fall is a good time to book a yearly tune-up so dust in the pilot is cleaned out.
What is the difference between a thermocouple and a thermopile?
A thermocouple keeps the pilot gas valve open. A thermopile makes a bit more power to run the main gas valve, wall switch or remote. Both are tested with a meter during a repair.
My fireplace clicks but won't light. What is wrong?
The igniter is sparking but gas is not reaching the pilot, or the spark is not reaching the gas. A blocked pilot, a closed valve, a bad electrode gap or air in a new gas line are common causes.
Can you fix fireplaces with electronic ignition?
Yes. We test intermittent pilot ignition (IPI) modules, receivers, batteries, remotes and wiring, and replace the failed part.
