Gas Log Repair & Replacement St. Louis

Professional Gas Log Service in St. Louis
Gas logs turn a masonry fireplace into an easy, no-mess fire. Over time the burner holes clog, the pilot gets dirty, and logs get bumped out of place. Logs placed even slightly wrong can block the flame, causing black soot on the logs, the firebox and sometimes the walls of the room.
We clean the burner and pilot, check the gas valve and connections, re-set the logs and embers exactly the way the manufacturer intended, and make sure the chimney damper is properly open or clamped for vented sets. When logs are cracked, crumbling or the burner is rusted through, we can help you choose and install a replacement gas log set that fits your fireplace.

Know Which Gas Log Set You Have
Vented gas logs burn with a tall, yellow, realistic flame and must be used with the chimney damper open, so the exhaust can go up the chimney. They need a clean, working chimney and a damper clamp or stop.
Vent-free gas logs burn hotter and cleaner and are designed to be used with the damper closed, but they release combustion moisture into the room and have strict limits on room size and run time. They also include an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) that shuts them off if the air quality drops. A dirty ODS pilot is a common reason vent-free logs shut off.
Not sure which one you have? We will tell you during the visit. Pair it with a chimney inspection if you have not had the chimney checked recently. Contact us to book.

Why are my gas logs making black soot?
Soot usually means the logs are out of place and blocking the flame, the burner is dirty, or the air mixture is wrong. Cleaning and re-setting the logs fixes most cases.
Can I move my gas logs myself?
Logs should be placed exactly as shown in the manufacturer’s diagram. Small changes can cause soot and carbon monoxide, so we recommend having a technician set them.
How long do gas logs last?
Many log sets last 10 to 15 years or more with yearly service. Cracked or crumbling logs and a rusted burner are signs it is time to replace them.
Should the damper be open with gas logs?
Vented gas logs must be used with the damper open. Vent-free logs are designed to run with it closed. If you are not sure which you have, do not use them until it is checked.
Do gas logs need yearly maintenance?
Yes. A yearly cleaning keeps the burner, pilot and ODS working properly. See our gas fireplace maintenance service.
